pikehead / 1798

One of a collection of Irish pikeheads. Being made mostly by local blacksmiths, they were not of standard shapes or sizes. In general it is not possible to date a pikehead by it's appearance. But one can over the whole distinguish three main types and four distinct methods of attaching them to the shafts. (1) Straight blade (2) Hook blade (3) Axe blade; (1) Plain tang (2) Split tang (3) Socket (4) Socket and split tang.;
