Hip flask, silver flask with a brown leather covering on the upper half. The initials 'E.H.S' engraved on the front (Ernest Henry Shackleton). Shackleton, Sir Ernest Henry (1874-1922), Irish-born polar explorer. A junior officer on Scott's first polar expedition of 1900 - 1904, Shackleton commanded an expedition of his own in 1909, getting within 155km (97miles) of the South Pole (the farthest South anyone had reached at that time) on a second expedition to th Antartic (1914-16) his ship the Endurance was crushed in the ice. Extracting his crew with great difficulty, Shackleton set out with five others from Elephant Island in an open boat on an epic 1300km voyage to South Geogia to get help. On a final Expedition to the Antartic in 1920-2 he died on South Georgia.;
