uniform / Irish Volunteers, Liam Mellows, 1916

Liam Mellows' Irish Volunteer tunic, 1916. Given to Pauline Barry by John MacNamara in Autumn 1916 on Mellows' behalf as a token of appreciation for assistance in his escape to the U.S.A. when he and Pauline Barry travelled dressed up as nuns. Green tunic bears the label 'Irish Tweed Company, 53 Mary Street, Dublin'. 4 brass buttons on front showing the harp between the letters 'IV' (two of these are made by Comyns and Sons, Dublin, whose name is impressed on the backs). Each of the four pockets is fastened by a lapel and closed by a similarly designed but smaller button bearing the Comyns imprint. Each shoulder strap is fastened by a similar button bearing the Comyns imprint. Each cuff has three bands of a device in similar cloth around three small buttons of the same design as those listed above - all of which except for the top button on the left cuff are by Comyns.;
