letter / Markievicz, 1917

A remarkable letter written by Constance de Markievicz to Mrs. Patridge on the occasion of Councillor William Patridge's death in 1917. Addressed from 9 Belgrave Road. 'Dear Mrs Partridge, I was greatly grieved to hear the sad news. Mr. Partridge as you know is the man I have to thank that I am a Catholic, and it was never my fate to know a nobler or braver man. I know he is happier now than he was sick and suffering here, God will bless him. I am writing to ask you if it would be possible for you to postpone the funeral to Sunday, as I don't think I could get down till the last train on Sat. night. He would have liked it and I greatly desire to show my respect and affection for him the last chance I shall have in this world. I should esteem it a great favour if you would grant my request. yours sincerely, Constance de Markievicz'.;
