bicycle / Terence Simpson, 1916
Bicycle which was ridden by Terence Simpson from Drumcondra to St. Stephen's Green and thence to Jacob's Factory on Easter Monday, 1916, when joining his unit in the rebellion. It was confiscated on the surrender and returned to him by the British military authorities at King George V Hospital in 1917.
Terence Simpson was a member of - 2nd Battalion, F Coy, Dublin Brigade
His Military Service Pension file relates his service - service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the Irish Volunteers and with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923. Following the Easter Rising was interned until (August) 1916. States he rejoined the Irish Volunteers upon release and was later involved in the failed rescue of Larry Ginnell. During the War of Independence Simpson states he took part in a number of armed raids, armed patrols and intelligence gathering. Simpson states that during the Truce period he attended training camps at Coolock and Kilmore. During the Civil War subject states he was involved in fighting with National Army forces at Barry's Hotel and that he was involved in sniping at Beggars' Bush Barracks. Was not arrested during Civil War period.
The saddle on the bicycle is the B85 LADY’S SADDLE by J.B. BROOKS AND CO. The wooden rims are by THE CLIPPER TYRE CO LTD , agents for (the Compagnie) FRANCO-AMERICAINE DES JANTES EN BOIS, PARIS makers of LAMINATED KUNDTZ wooden rims. No visible makers mark on the bike frame.;
