leaflet / Irish Volunteers, 1913

Irish Volunteers original handbill for first meeting. One of the original handbills issued for the purpose of convening a public meeting for the formation of the Irish Volunteers, November 25, 1913. It was handed to Padraig O'Connor in the streets and is now extremely rare. The pencil note 'what about Teddy now?' is a reference to the activities of the Ulster Volunteers and Carson's Campaign which culminated in the famous 'Curragh Revolt'. The note was written by the late J.A. Conmee (Bective Rangers Rugby Football Club) a former assistant in the National Library of Ireland and subsequently Lieutenant in the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed at Bullecourt in France May, 1917. R.I.P.;
