Roper of the Black Watch in middle centre, and in the left foreground Ed McEvoy, a prisoner, standing in the doorway through which the photograph was taken. McEvoy alarmed Roper, who had heard the click of the camera but did not know who had taken the photo, by saying that it would be used to identify him to the prisoners' friends on the outside.;
