Prayer book, 'The War as a Guide to Haeven [sic] - A little English Prayer Book for the use of Roman Catholic Soldiers living now in Germany'. Issued to Prisoners of War held in Germany during World War I. Includes writings on the ethics of killing in wartime, and the duties of the Catholic Soldier. This copy belonged to James Ward, and is inscribed ' To J. Ward from his friend A. Brown, Prisoner of War - every man is expected to do his duty'. Included inside the front cover is a loose sheet of paper with a newspaper cutting photograph of Roger Casement, inscribed on the back is '(1914) One of the old Irish Brigade, Limburgh, Germany. Up Dublin'. Also inscribed inside is J. Ward 2nd R.I.R. (Royal Irish Rifles). Prayer book compiled by Reverand Father H. Radermacher, Military Chaplain (Heinrich Josef Rademacher). Printed in Coelm, Germany, 1915. Stamped 'Rev. J.T. Crolty O.P.' in red ink. Brown paper covering.;
