tricolour / Mendicity Institute, 1916

Tricolour flag, ex Mendicity Institute, 1916. Flag of green, white and orange (or orange white and green) arranged horizontally. Received in the Mendicity Institute Dublin immediately after the surrender in Easter Week 1916 by the father of Reverand M. L. Ferrar,- a medical officer who had been brought into the Institute to attend the wounded there. It was understood by Ferrar that the flag had been brought into the Institute by the Volunteer force occupying it, and that it was their flag. The flag does not appear to have been used, or at least to have been exposed to the weather for any length of time. A small fragment of the green has been torn or cut out and is missing. Made of bunting with canvas edging to the hoist, into which edging a rope 17 foot and 6 inches long is sewn to serve as a halyard, or to fasten to a halyard. Flag 5 foot 10 inches in the fly by 4 foot 4 inches in the hoist.;
