Photograph of Charles John McGuinness, in Naval uniform. A native of Derry. Author of 'Nomad', and a member of the Byrd Antartic Expedition (1928-1930) and reportedly the only Irishman to hold the U.S. Congress medal for the Expedition. He presented the flag of the Expedition to Frank Walsh (who then gave it to Eamon de Valera who presented it to the National Museum). McGuinness ran two cargoes of Mausers to Waterford and Helvick during the Irish Civil War. He was captain of the first Irish Training Ship.;
