poster / Éire / West Britain / Gaelic League, 1920

Gaelic League Propaganda Poster c. 1920. Coloured poster, printed. Two panels with a sunburst between them. On the left, standing figure of Éire against a map of Ireland with figure representing Ireland with union jack on shoulders against a map of Ireland, with lettering "West Britain" on top. Overall size, c. 30" x 40". Poster designed by the late Miss Sarah Trench (Sadhbh Trinnseach - Mrs. Diarmuid Coffey) and published by Gaelic League c. 1920, when Seán Ó Muirthile was Secretary. Original done on brown paper in crayons and hung for a long time in Gaelic League office, 25, Parnell Sq. Design drawn on stone by Micheál Ua Briain at O'Loughlin, Murphy & Boland's Ltd., Upr. Dorset St. and printed by them. Much sought after by the British forces and a number of copies nailed under a litho stone rack undiscovered in raids on printers. The copy is probably one of these. Some of copies had wording between the pictures to the following effect (as well as informant remembers) "Connradh na Gaedhilge Support the Gaelic League"; "Ireland not free alone but Gaelic also". Over the wording a device of the rising sun.;
