greatcoat / Michael Collins

Michael Collins' greatcoat. Worn at the time of his death as result of ambush near Bandon, County Cork, 22nd August, 1922. There are the remains of dried mud on the bottom flap of the coat. Some evidence of blood under the collar on the right hand side. The coat and cap came from President Cosgrave's Office. Military style greatcoat. Double breasted with a pocket at each hip and a half-belt at back waist. There is an inverted pleat from upper back to the lower edge. Shoulder staps with three rows of gold lacing. Seven buttons at front, three at back belt. The upper part of the coat has a grey wool lining with a check pattern.;
