1916 Proclamation / 1916 Proclamation

An original Proclamation. Printed Easter Week 1916. Proclamation is endorsed by the original printers: M.J. Molloy, Compositor, Liam O'Briain, Compositor, Christopher Brady, Printer. On the back are the signatures of eleven of the prisoners in Mountjoy dated 19th May 1916. The printing press of the Republic was at Liberty Hall. The manuscript of the Proclamation was handed by Thomas MacDonagh to Christopher Brady on Sunday, April 23, between 11 and 12 o'clock midday. Next day, Easter Monday, between 12 and 1 o'clock the 2,500 copies printed were sent to the General Headquarters G.P.O. and from there to the different areas. The printers worked all night on an antique "double crown". Shortage of type neccessitated the use of wrong fonts and new letters had to be manufactured with sealing wax.
