ceremonial trowel / Daniel O'Connell, Conciliation Hall, 1843

Trowel, steel. Black oak carved handle, and harp shamrocks. The blade engraved 'This trowel was used by Daniel O'Connell Esq. M.P. when laying the first stone of the Great Repeal Hall, Corn Exchange, Dublin, on Thursday 30th Day of March 1843'. Below written 'This is the actual trowel used by The Liberator in laying the first stone of Conciliation Hall. A silver trowel was presented to him. This was given to me by Peter Martin, the builder of the hall T.M. Ray'. Blade stamped 'Duke Dublin'. On ferrule of handle a paper 'The trowel used in laying first stone of Conciliation Hall was presented by me to T.M. Ray. Peter Martin, Architect'. Length - sixteen and three quarter inches.;
