souvenir / G.P.O., 1916

A stone fragment of the British Royal Arms from the General Post Office, Dublin, 1916. Described by the donor Mr. E.F.N. Taylor - "When the front block of the G.P.O. was being reconstructed, it was found possible to preserve the greater portion of the original external walls, including the portico facing O'Connell Street. In the course of the reconstruction, the British Royal Arms, carried on the tympanum of the portico were removed. This fragment of the sculptured garter surrounding the Royal Arms is the letter 'N' from the word 'pense' in the motto 'Honi soit qui mal y pense'." The fragment is a piece of sandstone with sculpted letter "N", the latter 3.5 inches high.;
