Medal awarded by the Irish Government to participants in the Anglo-Irish War. Bronze. OBV: in the centre a figure of a soldier of the Irish Republican Army, wearing trenchcoat, leggings and cap with Sam Browne belt, revolver in holster at right side, bandolier over left shoulder, rifle slung over left shoulder, left hand gripping the sling. On the field behind the figure the word "Éire". Arranged on either side of figure in squares, two above and two below, the arms of the four provinces of Ireland. The latter connected by a single band of interlaced work which forms an inner margin. Between this latter and the rim of the medal, below the figure, "cogadh na saoirse". REV: A spray of foliage extended half way around the margin to the left, remainder of field plain. A single ring soldered to top of medal by which it is suspended from a second ring attached to the bar and thence to a ribbon 1.4" wide, divided vertically (black and tan). The pin-clasp fronted by an oblong plate 1.5" x .25", bronze, bearing Celtic design. This example has a bar with legend. "Cómhrac" at base of ribbon, 1.5" x .25". It is intended for presentation to combatants, EW 1138 in the same medal without bar and is presented to those not on activity service. Diameter of medal 1.6". Design by R.J. King. Made by the Jewellery and Metal Manufacturing Co. of Ireland, Ltd., Lr. Kevin St. Dublin 1940. A mounted cutting of the medal ribbon for wear when the medal is not being used accompanies the medal.
