processional sash / Irish Nationalist, 19th c

Irish Nationalist Processional Sash. Green silk linen with American cloth: gilt metal braid on edges and gilt thread on either extremity. Towards one end of sash, printed engraving, in black and white or white silk, of St. Patrick inscribed: "God Save Ireland" and "Saint Patrick". Towards other end (from top to bottom) are: rosette in green cloth (diam. 3 inches approx.) on which is sewn shamrock of gilt sequins: harp of gilt cord and sequins (2 inch sq. approx.), mounted on cardboard: heart of red silk cloth bordered by gilt braid (3 inches sq. approx.) with remains of decoration made from gilt metal braid in center. Worn at Irish Nationalist demonstartions at end of the 19th century. 82 inches by 5.5 inches approx.;
