Prayer book inscribed by Daniel O'Connell. Manual of Catholic Piety &c by Rev. W. Gahan, Dublin. J. Duffy 1844, containing on page 74 a parayer for Daniel O'Connell. Bound in black leather; the arms of O'Connell in gilt tooling. With inscription on fly leaf; 'From Daniel O'Connell to his fellow labourer and fellow captive for Ireland his beloved friend Thomas Steele, 26th July 1844'. Another inscription. "Patrick Downey, 12th May 1846, A present from Mr Thomas Steel" Vendor says 'The prayer book was presented in 1846 by Steele to Patrick Downey a waiter in the Kildare Street Club. Some years later Downey was attended by Surgeon Hayes of Dublin. The latter was presented by Downey with the prayer book. Surgeon Hayes presented it to his daughter Mrs McGrath.;
