The original of a draft of Patrick H. Pearse's order for the surrender of the Republican forces, dated 29th April, 1916, 4.45pm, to General Maxwell, offering an unconditional surrender. On embossed crown paper. Reads 'In order to prevent the further slaughter of unarmed people, and in the hope of saving the lives of our followers now surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered, the members of the Provisional Government present at Headquarters have agreed to an unconditional surrender, and the commanders of all units of the Republican forces will order their followers to lay down their arms. P.H. Pearse, 29th April 1916, 4.45pm'.
The typescript copy with the manuscript additions by James Connolly and Thomas MacDonagh was brought around Dublin garrisons by Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell with Fr Columbus. This copy was brought to garrisons around Dublin by one of the friars of the Capuchin Order - Fr Aloysius and Fr Columbus or Fr. Augustine, who were were all active in the negotiations between the garrisons and the British Military.;
