Thomas Moore, badge, gold and enamel, 1812. Circular, concave plate of gold: on the concave, side, or front, held in position by a raised rim which is soldered to the plate around is circumference , are (1) a band, belt, or circlet of gold and enamel and (2) a gold central plate which overlies the basic concave one. (1) The upper surface of the belt is made to show in gold letters against the blue champleve enamel the motto: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE: (2) On the circular gold plate lying within (1) is, applied the Prince of Wale's badge of a crown and three feathers, the crown of gold, the feathers of silver. From the outermost rim projects a gold plate, pierced and with incised lines to represent a bow of ribbon. On the back or convex surface of the back plate are incised - a crest of a mermaid holding a mirror; the motto: ICH DIEN: and the wording, THOS MOORE, ESQR., ELECTED 1812. Diam. 1.3 inches. Not established to what club or society this badge refers, or if the Thos. Moore mentioned is the Irish poet. The badge recieved in circular box covered in red letter C.F. a similar badge in the Sir John Scott Lillie bequest. This has ICH DIEN on the back, but no name, and labelled BADGE OF GEORGE IV WHEN PRINCE OF WALES.;
