medal / Daniel O'Connell Centenary

O'Connell Centenary Medal. Obverse depicts a bust of O'Connell facing front. Around above is written Birth Centenary of O'Connell Emancipator of Ireland A.D. 1875. Reverse depicts a tower, a harp, a Celtic cross and a hound against a mountain setting the top of the cross dividing Fide Et/ Patria. On a scroll above is written 'Born Aug. 6, 1775 Died May, 15, 1847'. On a band around is 'Great Champion of the Church - Father of his country, Glory of the Christian World' Pius IX. In exergue, a wreath of shamrocks on either side of a shield bearing the O'Connell crest, which shield overlaps the band below, the Regent on it starting and ending at either side of it. White metal, 1.5" wide, on a green ribbon which terminates at the top in a bronze clasp pin. On the ribbon is a gilt finished trefoil bearing the legend 'Home Rule For Ireland' over a harp.;
