ticket / Portlaw Relief District, 1846

Paper token or ticket, issued by the Portlaw Relief District stating that it is recommended that a Mr White, as a fit and deserving person, should receive three units of Indian meal, at six pence per stone(?). Numbered 153, initialed 'T.F.'. Signed, signature unclear, possibly W. Coleman. Portlaw Relief District, Co. Waterford, was established under the Relief Commission in about 1845 or 1846, to provide relief to those effected by the famine of the 1840s. It distributed imported meal and sold it at cost. The token is mounted onto a piece of card, on the back of which is attached a note reading 'One of the new houses that Edmond Power has in the garden between Carrick Road and the cross of Shamrock Street'. This may relate to the location the token was found.;
