Photograph in album depicting the evictions at Ballyfad, Coolgreany, on the Brooke Estate, North Co. Wexford, 1887. Handwritten caption; A council of war over Mrs Darcy’s eviction. At the Darcy cottage. The last scene of the eviction campaign. Friends and enemies. Police to the far left. The crowd behind climb up the fence but the military keep them from the doomed house. Seen on the left are Daniel Crilly M.P., John Dillon M.P., Michael Davitt and Priests. Captain Hamilton, the evicting agent, leaning on his stick talks to Captain Slack, the magistrate in command. In the background the emergency men waiting for the word. Captain Hamilton receives a telegram and postpones the eviction. July 1887.
Part of an album containing forty-seven photographs of Irish eviction scenes of the 1880s. Front cover missing.
A copy of this album is also in the National Library of Ireland, where is is catalogued as having been compiled by a T. Mallacy, also probably the photographer, who gave it to Fr Farrelly, who was involved in the Plan of Campaign in the Wexford area. His grand-niece donated the album to the NLI in 1992.;
