Fenian photograph, one of 45 contained in a photograph album. Photograph, with handwritten description and personal details of a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or Fenian Brotherhood, arrested c. 1868. Denis Burke, married, late Colonel U.S. Volunteers, age 26. Height 5 foot 11 inches, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, nose and mouth regular, long visage, slender make, cut wound on top of head, two teeth deficient front of lower jaw. Photograph numbered 10. A handwritten note at the back of the album reads ‘These photographs, except number 2 who was arrested in Manchester, were taken while the persons named, many of them it will be seen have held commissions in the U.S Army, were in custody in Ireland during the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, about 1868.;
