Fenian photograph, one of 45 contained in a photograph album. Photograph, with handwritten description and personal details of a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or Fenian Brotherhood, arrested c. 1868. John Norris, married, land surveyor. This was the head centre for Carlow and his wife was also actively engaged in the conspiracy. Age 35. Height 5 foot 11 ½ inches, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, regular nose and mouth, rather small visage, stout make. Photograph numbered 27. A handwritten note at the back of the album reads ‘These photographs, except number 2 who was arrested in Manchester, were taken while the persons named, many of them it will be seen have held commissions in the U.S Army, were in custody in Ireland during the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, about 1868.;
