Photograph, with handwritten description and personal details of a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or Fenian Brotherhood, arrested c. 1868. Thomas Southwell, single, shoemaker, age 27. Height 5 foot 9 inches, complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown, eyebrows black and leary, cocked nose, ordinary mouth, small oval visage, cut mark at top of left side of forehead, one tooth deficient in front of upper jaw. Photograph numbered 31. A handwritten note at the back of the album reads ‘These photographs, except number 2 who was arrested in Manchester, were taken while the persons named, many of them it will be seen have held commissions in the U.S Army, were in custody in Ireland during the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, about 1868.;
