Photograph, with handwritten description and personal details of a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or Fenian Brotherhood, arrested c. 1868. James Joseph Kirwan, single, gunsmith, age 25. Height 5 foot 8 inches, complexion fresh, hair black, eyes grey, ordinary nose, regular mouth, round visage, stout make, cut mark over left eyebrow, small mole on right cheek. Photograph numbered 34. A handwritten note at the back of the album reads ‘These photographs, except number 2 who was arrested in Manchester, were taken while the persons named, many of them it will be seen have held commissions in the U.S Army, were in custody in Ireland during the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, about 1868.;
