Fenian photograph, one of 45 contained in a photograph album. Photograph, with handwritten description and personal details of a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or Fenian Brotherhood, arrested c. 1868. Joseph Cleary, single, clerk, age 23. Height 5 foot 9 inches, complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown, nose a little crooked, mouth regular, oval visage, stout make, cut over left eye, mole on left side of neck. Photograph numbered 37. A handwritten note at the back of the album reads ‘These photographs, except number 2 who was arrested in Manchester, were taken while the persons named, many of them it will be seen have held commissions in the U.S Army, were in custody in Ireland during the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, about 1868.;
