(a) Letter from Daniel O’Connell to the Honorable William Lamb, Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1820s. The 'Beresford' referred to in the second page is Lord George Thomas Beresford, who was defeated in the Waterford election of 1826 by O'Connell's candidate, Henry Villiers Stuart. O'Connell also refers to Beresford's practice of housing his freehold tenants in the county gaol, with the purpose of having them vote for him under the threat of eviction. In the event, many of the freeholders in fact voted for O'Connell, leading to mass evictions. (b) A 19th-century print engraved by H. Robinson, after an original portrait of Daniel O’Connell by J.
