Commemorative plaque of General Richard Mulcahy. By John Coll, 1999. John Coll was commissioned by the Mulcahy family to create an image in bronze of General Mulcahy for a monument in Mulcahy Town Park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary (Mulcahy’s home town). This park was opened on 28th May 1999. The Mulcahy family then had a copy (HH:2000.3) made of this plaque and presented it to the National Museum. It was cast by Leo Higgins in CAST Ltd., 1a South Brown Street, Dublin 8. General Richard Mulcahy was Minister for Defence and Commander-in-Chief of the Irish Free State Army. On 12th December 1922, Mulcahy took over the Royal Barracks on behalf of the new government and reviewed the first Free State troops in the Barracks, which by then had been renamed Collins Barracks.
