commemorative jug / Success to Colonel Butler and Kilkenny Rangers, circa 1780

Jug, earthenware, cream colour. On either side a transfer-printed black intertwined scroll and floral frame. Inside each frame a representation in black transfer of a volunteer in uniform, one facing carrying a musket and the other side in the act of firing. The figures wear black cocked hats with five plumes of feathers; a green coat with white facings; white waistcoat and breeches, red sash and black gaiters. The ground painted in yellow, green and brown. Underneath the spout within palm and floral wreath 'Success to Colonel Butler and Kilkenny Rangers' and below 'First Volunteer Company in Ireland.' Marked on base twice 'WEDGWOOD'. Slight crack to left of spout. About 1780. The Kilkenny Rangers were formed in 1770.;
