Plate, probably Sunderland, about 1840. Glazed white earthenware souvenir plate. Octagonal shape; rim flange moulded with individual flowers. Moulded rope edge painted with purple lustre. Transfer printed in brown with Father Mathew in top coat and top hat preaching to a kneeling well dressed penitents. The Legend is 'Father Mathew Administering the Total Abstinance Pledge';
