The obverse depicts the figure of a soldier of the Irish Republican Army, surrounded by the arms of the four provinces of Ireland and with the words 'Cogadh na Saoirse' ('War of Independence') beneath and 'Éire' behind. The ribbon bears the 'Comhrac' ('Combat') bar, indicating that the recipient saw active service.;
