coatee / 101st Regiment Foot, 1794

Coatee, 101st Regiment Foot, 1794. Full length skirted, long sleeved, scarlet military coat with white curved lapels, collar and cuffs. The coat is unlined and has two functional pockets with flaps decorated with false buttonholes worked in metal wrapped threads. There are functional gilt buttons with the number "101" surmounted by a crown at each lapel and at the cuffs. Non-functional buttons are found at the cuffs, at the back and below the pockets. The sleeves are fully lined. There is a double vent opening at the centre back. There is a short piece (37mm) of plied thread secured at each end to the left shoulder cap, this thread is secured on the inside of the fabric, this may have been the attachment point of an epaulette. There is no evidence that a similar thread was found at the right shoulder cap.;
