mortar grenade / Experimental, Limerick, 1920

Experimental grenade for trench mortar made at Keelogues, Co. Limerick in 1920. The mortar had been captured in North Cork and was brought to Keelogues to see if suitable ammunition could be made for it. The fuse on the grenades as made were to be ignited, the grenade then dropped into the mortar where the explosive charge at base went off firing the grenade. The first was fired successfully, the second exploded the mortar injuring Peadar Dunne and this is the third of the batch.;
