flag / Boland's Mill Garrison, 1916

A fragment of flag which flew over Boland's Mills during Easter Week. the flag was originally a green field with a gold harp. Consisting of a strip of green woollen cloth. The Boland's Mills flag was flown from the turret of the distillery in the complex of buildings to distract attention from the main occupied buildings. This section of the flag was presented by a Mr Joseph Kennedy in 1935, stating that is was a piece of the tricolour which flew over Boland's Mills in 1916, and was given to him, presumably by a participant, whose details he could not remember. However, the presence of the strings of a gold harp confirms that this is part of a flag of a green field and gold harp, known to be the Boland's Mills flag. Eamon de Valera, the garrison commander, donated half this flag (in two sections) in his role as An Taoiseach in 1941. The existence of these different sections of the flag would suggest that the flag may have been ripped up for souvenirs for the garrison members after the surrender.;
