illuminated address / Alderman James Moran, c.1925

Illuminated address, Presented to Alderman James Moran with gold chain of office [HH:2006.7 (1)]. A hand-bound illuminated address to Alderman Moran, asking him to accept the accompanying Alderman’s chain from ‘friends and fellow citizens’ including the Marchioness of Aberdeen, Alderman Alfred Byrne, Sir Maurice Dockrell M.P., Sir John Purser Griffith, Hugh Kennedy, William Martin Murphy, Miss Mac Nie, Bethel Solomans M.D., etc. (c. 150 subscribers listed). The address is illuminated in Celtic Revival style by Mary Fitzpatrick, on eleven mounted pages, with monochrome drawings of Dublin scenes by or after Fergus Ryan. Bound in full brown morocco, elaborately gilt with Celtic designs on upper cover and spine. Signed by Brindley’s of Dublin, in a related hand-made leather box. Undated, perhaps c. 1925. Alderman James Moran was first elected to Dublin City Council from the Clontarf East Ward in 1915. He served on various committees and on the Port and Docks Board, of which he became Vice-Chairman and Chairman (1924). He became a Senator in 1923, serving until 1934 (when the body was abolished by de Valera). The address particularly cites the ‘Alderman Moran Concerts’ in the Castle Hospital, which raised money for wounded soldiers, and his ‘most successful work in providing food for the people during the Rebellion’, as well as the reconstruction of Sackville Street, the widening of Earl Street, and the provision of a new sea wall. In bespoke case.;
