commemorative jug / Horticultural Society of Ireland

Lustre jug, probably Staffordshire, circa 1817. Light glazed earthenware jug of Spode 'Low Dutch' shape. Pronounced lip moulded with acanthus leaf edge; shaped handle. Gold lustre (pink/purple in appearance) in band around neck and foot; outlining details around lip, as sprigs on handle and in an olive branch effect in a band below lip. Each full face is transfer-printed in black with a crest in which a man stands digging soil; on either side two ladies in flowing gowns, one holding a cornucopia, the other a swag of glowers. On a ribbon underneath is 'In the Sweat of the Brow shalt thou earn thy Bread'. Underneath is 'Horticultural Society of Ireland Established 1st Jany, 1817, Patron Earl Charlemont.';
