commemorative jug / Duke of Leinster

Jug, Staffordshire cream ware pottery, about 1780. Decorated with three black transfer printed designs: 1) Portrait of the second Duke of Leinster, with, above PRINTED AND SOLD BY WALSH AND BARDLEY, DUBLIN and, below HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF LEINSTER. 2) Figures of children playing on steps under an arch, an open eye shown in the sky above them, and, below: TO JUDGE WITH CANDOR, AND TO SPEAK NO WRONG, THE FEEBLE TO SUPPORT AGAINST THE STRONG, TO SOOTH THE WRETCHED AND THE POOR TO FEED, WILL COVER MANY AN IDLE FOOLISH DEED. 3) Female figure holding a lamb, and below: SWEET MAID AN EMBLEM OF THE LAMB YOU BEAR, MAY YOUR LIFE PASS WITHOUT A GUILTY TEAR, MAY YOUR LIFE PASS WITHOUT A GUILTY TEAR. Cracked. Handle and portion of lip missing.;
